FINANCIAL REPORTING VALUATION | ASC 360

Understanding ASC 360

ASC 360, Property, Plant, and Equipment, provides guidance for evaluating long-lived assets for impairment. An impairment may exist when the carrying amount of a long-lived asset or asset group is not recoverable and exceeds its fair value.

Companies may be required to evaluate long-lived assets or asset groups for recoverability when events or changes in circumstances indicate that their carrying amounts may not be recoverable.

What Is Impairment?

An impairment loss is recognized when a long-lived asset or asset group is not recoverable and its carrying amount exceeds its fair value.

The ASC 360 Impairment Testing Process

01 — Recoverability Test

02 — Measurement of Impairment

02 — Measurement of Impairment

The carrying amount of the long-lived asset or asset group is compared with the undiscounted cash flows expected from its use and eventual disposition.

If the carrying amount exceeds those cash flows, the asset or asset group is not recoverable, and an impairment measurement is required.

02 — Measurement of Impairment

02 — Measurement of Impairment

02 — Measurement of Impairment

If the asset or asset group is not recoverable, the impairment loss is measured as the amount by which its carrying amount exceeds its fair value.

Fair value is determined in accordance with applicable guidance, including ASC 820, Fair Value Measurement.

Expected Sale or Disposal

An expectation that a long-lived asset or asset group will be sold or otherwise disposed of significantly before the end of its previously estimated useful life.

FINANCIAL REPORTING VALUATION | ASC 360 & ASC 350

ASC 360 and Goodwill Impairment

ASC 360 and ASC 350 address different categories of assets but may both be relevant when a company evaluates its assets for impairment.

Under ASC 360, long-lived assets or asset groups are evaluated for recoverability when impairment indicators are present. Goodwill and certain intangible assets are evaluated separately under ASC 350, Intangibles—Goodwill and Other.

When multiple asset categories may be affected, the sequence of impairment testing is important. Impairment losses recognized for other assets may affect the carrying amount used in a subsequent goodwill impairment analysis.

FINANCIAL REPORTING VALUATION | FAIR VALUE

Fair Value Measurement

When a long-lived asset or asset group is determined to be not recoverable under ASC 360, fair value is used to measure the resulting impairment loss.

Under ASC 820, Fair Value Measurement, fair value is defined as the price that would be received to sell an asset or paid to transfer a liability in an orderly transaction between market participants at the measurement date.

For an ASC 360 impairment analysis, the impairment loss is measured as the amount by which the carrying amount of the asset or asset group exceeds its fair value.

ASC 820 Fair Value

Fair value reflects an exit price based on the assumptions market participants would use when pricing an asset at the measurement date.
